Chinese automotive brand BYD, which focuses on Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), has announced plans to build a factory in Indonesia, specifically in Subang City, West Java Province. The investment for this factory amounts to 16 trillion Indonesian Rupiah. The project was confirmed after PT BYD Motor Indonesia (BYD) signed a cooperation agreement with PT Suryabuat Swadaya, the developer of the Subang Smartpolitan industrial area. After multiple evaluations, BYD considers the Subang Smartpolitan industrial area to be the best location for BYD to develop its electric vehicle industry in Indonesia. This industrial area meets standards in terms of area, distance, environment, and infrastructure, so the completed facilities will be able to promote the development of Indonesia's automotive industry and the transition to clean energy, while supporting the country's economy, especially the surrounding regions. They are confident in these facilities. In terms of investment value, the company has prepared a substantial budget to explore the Indonesian automotive market. The budget includes a research and development center as well as training facilities employing the latest energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies. However, they were unable to disclose the groundbreaking date for the Indonesian factory, with a current manufacturing capacity target of 150,000 units per year and a total investment target of over USD 1 billion in Indonesia. The Subang Smartpolitan industrial area is integrated with various national strategic infrastructure projects. The location is easily accessible via the Cikopo-Palimanan (Cipali) toll road at KM 89, which is also under development. In addition, the area is close to the Patimban toll road that directly connects to Patimban Port, Kertajati International Airport, and the Trans Java toll road connecting Jakarta, Bandung, and other cities in West and Central Java. Subang Smartpolitan, an integrated urban area for industrial and commercial zones in Indonesia, welcomes this cooperation and supports BYD's initiatives to encourage sustainable transportation in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. The local community warmly welcomes BYD's presence in Subang Smartpolitan. This proves that the industrial area's infrastructure is suitable to support the creation of the electric vehicle ecosystem built by BYD, which will also contribute to national development. BYD's electric vehicle production facility will be located in the second phase area of Subang Smart City, specifically the northern part of the area. With a comprehensive and integrated electric vehicle ecosystem plan, BYD will use a maximum land area of over 108 hectares. Following the signing of the agreement between the two parties, the next step is the land handover, which will take place in August 2024. BYD plans to gradually develop operations, with an expected start of operations in January 2026.
