A battery and technology company from China, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), is preparing to build an electric vehicle battery factory in Indonesia. The President of Wuling Motors recently revealed this information on the sidelines of the GIIAS 2024 exhibition held at ICE BSD, Tangerang. He stated that the TKDN of Wuling electric vehicles reaches up to 40%, including battery localization in cooperation with Gotion. They already have a local assembly factory in Indonesia and possess a packaging line. Therefore, batteries are produced locally, including for products exported to Thailand. However, after this, they also plan to invest in Indonesia, and other companies like CATL also intend to produce here.
The company will cooperate with suppliers of locally produced batteries, but not with the LG-Hyundai factory that was just inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in Karawang, West Java. Therefore, whether in terms of investment or localization, they have seriously considered it. In the gradual TKDN process, they will cooperate with suppliers that can already produce locally. In fact, Wuling also has plans, and CATL also has plans to come here. However, there are currently no plans regarding the Karawang battery factory. Previously, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves), Luhut, stated that electric vehicle battery manufacturer CATL is committed to investing in Indonesia, with a fund of 350 billion US dollars, equivalent to 550.47 trillion Indonesian rupiah. This investment will be used to build an electric vehicle lithium battery ecosystem in the country.
