Jakarta, January 24 (People's Daily Online) — On January 23, a dialogue themed "Promoting People-to-People Connectivity, Building a Better Home Together" and the release of the Top 10 News on China-ASEAN Cooperation, part of the China-ASEAN Year of People-to-People Exchanges, were held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The event, under the theme "Exchange, Understanding, Mutual Trust, Win-Win Cooperation," was guided by the China International Communications Group and jointly organized by the Asia-Pacific Communication Center of CICG, China Foreign Affairs University, President University of Indonesia, Asia-Pacific Think Tank, and Huadian Overseas Investment Co., Ltd. It received support from the Thailand Research Center of the Thailand National Research Council, Huadian (Indonesia) Boya Company, Asian Leadership News Agency, Guangxi University of Foreign Languages, and other think tanks, media, and Chinese-invested institutions in Indonesia. Geng Hailing, Counselor of the Chinese Mission to ASEAN; Donlakorn, Advisor to the Administrative Committee of the Thai Senate; Chairy, President of President University of Indonesia; Wilon, Chairman of Asia-Pacific Think Tank; Guo Yanjun, Director of the Institute of Asian Studies at China Foreign Affairs University; Lai Jianwen, Deputy Secretary-General of the Indonesian Solidarity Party; Lin Jianwei, Advisor of the Asia-Pacific Think Tank Malaysia Center; Gu Qiucheng, Chairman of Huadian (Indonesia) Boya Company; Zhong Zhifeng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangxi University of Foreign Languages; along with over 100 representatives from political circles, think tanks, media, Chinese-invested enterprises, and youth students from China and ASEAN countries attended the event. In his video speech, Gao Anming stated that China and ASEAN are connected by mountains and rivers and share a common destiny. People-to-people exchanges are not only the spiritual bond sustaining the vitality of China and ASEAN countries but also the solid foundation for building a peaceful, safe, prosperous, beautiful, and friendly "five homes" together. In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative, giving the ancient Silk Road a new contemporary significance. Over the past decade, China and ASEAN have supported each other, achieving major outcomes such as the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway and the China-Laos Railway. These are clear examples of the upgrading of China-ASEAN economic and trade cooperation and vivid expressions of the increasingly close comprehensive strategic partnership. To further promote high-quality cooperation between China and ASEAN countries and contribute to building a China-ASEAN community with a shared future, he proposed strengthening media collaboration to tell new stories of people-to-people connectivity, deepening youth exchanges to foster new momentum for cultural exchanges, and focusing on cooperative development to create new win-win outcomes. Geng Hailing said that over the past decade, China and ASEAN have worked together to build a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future. China-ASEAN relations have become the most successful and vibrant example of regional cooperation in the Asia-Pacific. 2024 is the China-ASEAN Year of People-to-People Exchanges. He hopes that media friends will continue to contribute to China-ASEAN relations, tell the stories of friendly interactions between the two sides, and promote the growing warmth of mutual affection between the peoples of both sides. He also hopes that China and ASEAN will further deepen people-to-people exchanges, expand their breadth, and increase their intensity. Donlakorn stated in his speech that Thailand is an old friend of China, and the concept of "China and Thailand as one family" is deeply rooted in the hearts of both peoples. Thailand is a participant in the Belt and Road Initiative and a beneficiary of its cooperation. He believes that the exchange of governance experiences between Thailand and China will give new contemporary significance to "China and Thailand as one family" and transform the traditional friendship between the two countries into a driving force for win-win cooperation. Chairy stated that cooperation between China and ASEAN has brought China and Indonesia closer, continuously promoting high-quality development in trade, investment, and education, and contributing to regional economic growth. More and more Chinese companies are investing in Indonesia, bringing more job opportunities to local communities and providing scholarships for underprivileged Indonesian students. Wilon stated that during his visit to Indonesia in 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed building a China-ASEAN community with a shared future. Over the past decade, both sides have practiced multilateralism and adhered to open regionalism, making China-ASEAN economic, trade, and cultural exchanges closer, creating opportunities for peaceful and stable historical development in the region. He believes that the happiness of the people is a common development goal for all ASEAN countries. Building a more fair and equitable international order is the common aspiration of the people of China and ASEAN. Gu Qiucheng stated that although China and Indonesia have different cultures, they have always been sincere and mutually supportive friends and mutually beneficial partners. The efficient completion and commissioning of the Boya project is not only a vivid reflection of Huadian Overseas Investment's involvement in Indonesia's development and service to local communities but also a result of the upgrading and improvement of cooperation between China and Indonesia for the benefit of the people. During the project construction, Huadian Overseas Investment actively fulfilled its social responsibilities, investing heavily in technical training, public welfare projects, and disaster relief and epidemic response, putting into practice the spirit of "extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits" and continuously injecting vitality into local development. At the subsequent roundtable forum on "Promoting People-to-People Connectivity, Building a Better Home Together" for media and think tanks, representatives from political circles, media, think tanks, and enterprises in the ASEAN region reviewed the achievements of building the China-ASEAN community and discussed the common vision of jointly building a better home in the new era. Lai Jianwen stated that Indonesia was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with New China and has a large Chinese community. Indonesia and China are continuously deepening the integration of industrial and supply chains, jointly advancing the construction of the "Regional Comprehensive Economic Corridor" and the "Two Countries, Twin Parks" projects with great success, especially in the field of new energy vehicle cooperation. Indonesia and China are important partners in economic development. Lin Jianwei stated that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China. The friendship between China and Malaysia has a long history. The Malaysian people admire China's tremendous achievements. Chinese-style modernization and high-level opening-up have brought new development opportunities for Malaysia. Zhong Zhifeng stated that education is closely linked to economic and social development. China-ASEAN education cooperation will contribute to regional common development and prosperity, improve people's well-being, and enable over 2 billion people to live better lives. Guangxi University of Foreign Languages has the largest number of foreign language majors and the most languages among universities in Guangxi. It has carried out diversified cooperation with ASEAN countries, creating a platform for close exchanges between the youth of both sides. Gu Qiucheng stated that the Boya project in Indonesia accounts for 18% of the existing installed capacity on Sumatra Island. It is the largest, most advanced, and most environmentally friendly unit on the island, representing an important achievement of China-Indonesia cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. "Chinese standards and Chinese technology" have improved Indonesia's energy structure, cultivated local power technical talents, built transmission lines, and helped local children receive education and escape poverty, making positive contributions to Indonesia's development and China-Indonesia cooperation. At the event, Guo Yanjun, on behalf of the Asia-Pacific Communication Center of CICG and the Institute of Asian Studies of China Foreign Affairs University, officially released the "2023 Top 10 News on China-ASEAN Cooperation." The top 10 news items were jointly selected by the Asia-Pacific Communication Center of CICG, the Institute of Asian Studies of China Foreign Affairs University, and relevant academic institutions, summarizing the achievements of China and ASEAN in head-of-state diplomacy, Belt and Road cooperation, and key areas over the past year, demonstrating the good momentum and great potential of China-ASEAN cooperation. The event was chaired by Chen Wenge, Director of the Asia-Pacific Communication Center of CICG. In his concluding remarks, Chen Wenge said that the release of the 2023 Top 10 News on China-ASEAN Cooperation made us feel that China-ASEAN people-to-people exchanges have reached a new level through joint efforts.
