Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhut, stated: "The entry of BYD's new energy vehicles into the Indonesian market can make big cities like Jakarta cleaner, make our lives healthier, and drive the development of Indonesia's electric vehicle industry." In recent years, the Indonesian government has actively introduced policies to encourage the development of the electric vehicle industry. The Indonesian government has included expanding electric vehicle production in the "2011-2025 Indonesian Economic Development Master Plan" and proposed plans for electric vehicle supporting infrastructure in the "2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan." Since 2019, the Indonesian government has introduced a series of incentives for electric vehicle manufacturers, transportation companies, and consumers, including reducing import tariffs on related production materials, providing tax exemptions for electric vehicle companies, offering purchase subsidies for consumers, and encouraging the conversion of fuel vehicles to electric propulsion systems. In April 2023, the Indonesian government also significantly reduced the value-added tax on electric vehicles from 11% to 1%, leading to a notable decrease in the prices of electric vehicles on the market. As Indonesia's electric vehicle industry preferential policies gradually take effect, more and more Chinese new energy vehicle companies and battery manufacturers are actively expanding their investments in Indonesia and exploring the local market. As early as October 2018, BYD's first electric bus entered Indonesia, and now many BYD electric buses can be seen on the streets of Jakarta. In May 2023, BYD signed a memorandum of understanding with Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs to explore the development of the electric vehicle industry in Indonesia. According to reports, BYD plans to invest $1.3 billion in Indonesia to build a factory with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles and establish a sales network with 50 dealerships across Indonesia by the end of 2024. Luhut stated that BYD's investment in the Indonesian market is conducive to promoting Indonesia's energy transition and economic growth, helping Indonesia address climate change. Chinese automaker Wuling also performed outstandingly in Indonesia's electric vehicle market. Wuling was the first Chinese automaker to enter the Indonesian market and build a local factory. It has now established 150 sales and service outlets covering major cities and regions in Indonesia. In 2022, Wuling launched a small electric vehicle in Indonesia, which was highly favored by consumers due to its high cost-effectiveness. Local drivers believe that this car is not only affordable but also compact and energy-efficient, making it especially convenient for driving on narrow city roads. Leveraging its innovative advantages in the electric vehicle field, Neta Auto is also accelerating its "going global" efforts in Indonesia. In October 2023, Neta Auto introduced its smart electric vehicles to Indonesia and signed a cooperation agreement with a leading local automaker to achieve localized production from the second quarter of 2024 onward. Sun Guang, Assistant President and Executive Vice President of Overseas Business at Neta Auto, told our reporter that the Indonesian government supports the development of the electric vehicle industry, has introduced a series of promotional measures to encourage people to buy electric vehicles, and that Indonesia's electric vehicle market has huge potential. "Indonesia has become an important destination for Neta Auto's international expansion." Indonesian Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang stated that Indonesia hopes to become a globally competitive regional production center for electric vehicles and that cooperation with China aligns with Indonesia's development plans. He emphasized that China is one of the world's largest electric vehicle producers, and Indonesia is ready to cooperate with China in developing the electric vehicle ecosystem. "Such cooperation will also help ASEAN achieve green and sustainable development goals."
