Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut recently revealed that Chinese well-known electric vehicle manufacturer BYD plans to start investment activities in Indonesia in July 2024. This news is based on a report from the Deputy Coordinating Minister for Investment and Mining who recently returned from China. Luhut stated that BYD's factory construction project is scheduled to start in July, and all progress will be disclosed in detail in the future. He emphasized that to ensure the effective construction of the ecosystem, the government will ensure that all relevant departments and institutions are equipped with complete electric vehicle charging facilities, thereby promoting the formation of an electric vehicle ecosystem between Jakarta and Surabaya. The government aims to encourage as many people as possible to adopt electric cars or electric motorcycles, implementing various incentive policies nationwide. Luhut also pointed out that BYD has shown strong interest in investing in Indonesia and plans to start commercial production in the country by early 2026. He previously made it clear that although Tesla's investment has not yet materialized, the government will not wait for it because BYD's investment plan has been confirmed. BYD has officially committed to investing $1.3 billion (approximately IDR 20 trillion) to build a production base in Indonesia. Luhut also mentioned that the government is open to Elon Musk's Tesla if it chooses to establish a production factory in Indonesia. However, even if Tesla ultimately does not set up a factory in Indonesia, it does not matter much to him.
