Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs (Menko Marves) Luhut publicly admitted that he is dissatisfied with the results of the food industry development in the Humbang Hasundutan area of North Sumatra. Therefore, he invited the Chinese side to participate in the granary project initiated by President Joko Widodo. Humbang Hasundutan is one of the food industrial park locations being developed by the government, in addition to Central Kalimantan, Central Java, Papua, and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). During the fourth High-Level Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Labuan Bajo some time ago, he stated that the development of agricultural crop industries is one of the areas of cooperation between the two countries.
For example, chili peppers, onions, garlic, as well as durian, fruits, and others are currently being cooperated on by both sides. The two countries are collaborating to build a laboratory. Without research, technology transfer cannot be completed. Subsequently, the government, together with researchers from both countries, will build research facilities for the yields of crops such as chili peppers and shallots. A local partner is also required. The development of the Humbang Hasundutan Food Industrial Park began in 2022, focusing on agricultural crops such as shallots, garlic, potatoes, cabbage, and chili peppers. Citing data from the official website of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan), as of June 2023, the cumulative planted area of the Humbahas Food Estate has reached 482.84 hectares.
