Indonesia's state-owned tin company (PT Timah/Persero Tbk, stock code TINS) announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for Indonesia's rare earth (LTJ) processing plant will be held on May 20, 2026. The project is being built under the direction of President Prabowo, and upon completion, it will help Indonesia occupy an important position in the global rare earth supply chain, which is in high demand. The President Director of PT Timah revealed during a hearing with the House of Representatives Commission XII that the project will be carried out in collaboration between PT Timah and Perminas. According to the division of responsibilities, PT Timah will act as the supplier of rare earth raw materials, primarily providing associated rare earth minerals (SHP/REE) generated from tin mining operations, which will serve as the core feedstock for rare earth processing. Perminas will be responsible for feedstock offtake, deep processing, and downstream industry development, achieving high-value-added conversion of rare earth resources. This collaboration aims to accelerate resource monetization, with the project targeting commercial operations within two years after groundbreaking, producing high-value-added rare earth products that will generate substantial foreign exchange revenue for Indonesia. He also noted that the project has been underway for only about 1.5 to 2 months, and specific details are still under in-depth study by both parties, so more detailed planning data cannot be disclosed at this stage. According to reports, the economic value of tin-associated rare earth minerals could increase dozens of times if successfully processed into high-end products. These products can be widely applied in power generation equipment, solar photovoltaics, electric vehicles, and other strategic emerging industries, which is of great significance to Indonesia's energy transition and manufacturing upgrade. He officially confirmed that the groundbreaking ceremony, along with the foundation-laying ceremony for the rare earth research and production facility, has been scheduled for May 20, 2026, and is planned to be attended and presided over by President Prabowo. Once completed, the project will not only complete Indonesia's rare earth supply chain but also further strengthen the country's position in the global critical mineral supply chain, driving the mining sector's transformation from raw material exports to high-value-added deep processing.
