In May 2026, the Indonesian four-wheeled vehicle market weakened, with both wholesale and retail sales declining month-on-month. Manufacturers' wholesale volume to dealers was only 69,219 units, down 14.3% month-on-month; dealers' retail sales to end consumers were 71,890 units, down 5.1% month-on-month, underperforming April. Despite the monthly pressure, the cumulative market for the first five months of the year continued to grow. From January to May, total terminal retail sales reached 359,490 units, up 8.8% year-on-year; cumulative wholesale volume was 359,015 units, up 12.8% year-on-year, indicating a positive overall annual trend. Japanese brands still firmly hold the top positions in the Indonesian market. Toyota remains the industry leader with May retail sales of 21,379 units and wholesale of 24,846 units, an unshakable advantage. Daihatsu, under the same group, ranked second with retail sales of 12,531 units, closely following Toyota. Traditional Japanese brands such as Suzuki, Mitsubishi Motors, and Honda still firmly occupy the top five sales positions. The biggest highlight of the month came from fierce competition among new Chinese automakers. Jaecoo performed remarkably, with monthly retail sales reaching 3,000 units, directly entering the sixth place in the retail ranking, pushing new energy giant BYD to seventh place. BYD's May retail sales were 2,892 units. Geely also entered the top ten in both wholesale and retail rankings, indicating the rapid rise of Chinese brands in the Indonesian passenger vehicle market.
