Teo Chew Community Association of Indonesia

Background

Entering the 21st century, with Indonesia's comprehensive democratic reform advancing in 2000, the social environment became increasingly open and inclusive, creating favorable conditions for the organization and development of the Chinese community. Against this historical backdrop, various Chinese community associations emerged like bamboo shoots after spring rain, showing vigorous vitality. It was precisely under this historical context that the Teo Chew Community Association of Indonesia was established.

On August 30, 2000, three highly respected Teo Chew community leaders—Huang Jijun, Yang Jinfeng, and Xie Jiati—jointly invited several enthusiastic fellow countrymen to gather at Jakarta's Daban Restaurant, formally proposing the establishment of the "Teo Chew Community Association of Indonesia." The proposal received unanimous approval from the attendees, who agreed that the time was ripe and the move was imperative. Over the following month, after extensive in-depth discussions, it was ultimately decided that 21 enthusiastic fellow countrymen would serve as the association's initiators.

Formal Process

On September 27, 2000, the Interim Preparatory Committee of the Teo Chew Community Association of Indonesia was formally established, electing three fellow countrymen—Zeng Guokui, Xie Jiati, and Zhang Baoxian—as directors of the preparatory committee, fully responsible for all core matters related to the association's establishment. During the preparatory period, all parties worked together, pooling wisdom and efforts, to efficiently advance various preparations. On January 19, 2001, the Teo Chew Community Association of Indonesia was officially declared established. The first council elected Mr. Huang Jijun as Chairman, Mr. Yang Jinfeng as Supervisor, and Mr. Huang Bingxiang as Secretary-General, marking a new stage of organized and institutionalized development for the Teo Chew community in Indonesia.

Purpose and Core Mission

Since its inception, the association has established a clear purpose: to unite Teo Chew fellow countrymen at home and abroad, strengthen hometown bonds; to preserve and promote the excellent traditional culture of Chaoshan; and to expand the communication network among Teo Chew people in Indonesia, enhancing communication and collaboration to promote common development. This purpose not only consolidates the emotional identity of the vast number of Teo Chew compatriots but also lays a solid foundation for subsequent work.

Development Achievements and Social Contributions

In 2002, the association successfully completed the election of its second council. Mr. Zeng Guokui was elected as the new Chairman, and Mr. Lian Jiehao as Supervisor. Under his leadership, the association actively engaged in Chinese language education, investing in schools, funding teaching materials, organizing cultural activities, and other means to effectively bridge the gap in Chinese language education caused by historical reasons, vigorously promoting the transmission of Chinese language and culture.

After 16 years of relentless effort, with the joint efforts of successive councils, the Teo Chew Community Association of Indonesia has continuously expanded its service areas: on one hand, it actively promotes industrial and commercial information sharing and resource matching among members to support business development; on the other hand, it extensively participates in social welfare and community building, fulfilling social responsibilities. Today, the association has grown into one of the most influential Chinese community organizations in Indonesia, continuously making positive contributions to promoting ethnic harmony, cultural heritage, and economic and social development.
