Indonesian state-owned mining group MIND ID's subsidiary PT Freeport Indonesia has entered into a strategic collaboration with state-owned defense industry group DEFEND ID to build a brass rolling mill and brass casting production line at the Gresik Industrial Park in East Java, with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons. Leveraging its own copper mine resources, the initiative aims to optimize copper supply, support Indonesia's defense and military industry, and fill gaps in the ammunition component supply chain. To further absorb Freeport's cathode copper output and meet domestic manufacturing demand, MIND ID plans to expand copper rod and copper wire production facilities with a designed annual capacity of 300,000 tons, along with an ancillary copper tube production line with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons, completing the full chain layout of copper deep processing and achieving local conversion and utilization of domestic copper ore resources.
In the gold downstream processing sector, MIND ID is focused on boosting precious metal capacity, using copper smelting anode slime from the Freeport refinery as raw material to extract and produce gold bars. PT Antam will build new precious metal processing facilities with an annual gold output of 30 tons, equivalent to 5 million gold investment products per year, meeting domestic public demand for gold investment and consumption. All copper and gold downstream processing projects are located at the JIIPE Industrial Park in Gresik, East Java, which offers land-sea multimodal transport conditions, integrated logistics support, and one-stop approval services, and works in coordination with the Indonesian Port Authority to ensure efficient raw material transport, product outbound logistics, and project implementation.
At the groundbreaking ceremony for the Gresik copper-gold integrated downstream processing project, President Prabowo delivered a virtual speech noting that intensifying international geopolitical competition has led countries to vie for control over natural resources. Indonesia's push for the resource downstream deep-processing strategy aims to independently control its mineral wealth, retain resource revenues domestically, and serve national development—an indispensable path to national rejuvenation. He emphasized that Indonesia must dare to independently control and locally process natural resources, and that resource downstream industrialization is the only route to national prosperity.
MIND ID's Director of Mineral Downstream Ecosystem Strategy stated that the group's current deployment fully aligns with government mandates and the president's policy agenda, advancing resource downstreaming and industrialization. By building integrated manufacturing facilities, Indonesia will establish a stable local copper and gold supply chain, further boosting manufacturing's contribution to the national economy. This series of projects is also a key component of the Danantara National Downstreaming Project, not only expanding production capacity but also comprehensively strengthening the nation's strategic industrial foundation from upstream raw materials to downstream end products, refining the copper and gold industry chain needed for defense, military, consumer goods, and manufacturing, and helping Indonesia achieve industrial upgrading and independent economic development based on its mineral resources.
