One of Indonesia's largest automotive groups, Indomobil Group, recently announced that it will introduce two major Chinese automotive brands — Hongqi and Leap Motor — in 2026, formally entering the Indonesian automotive market. Among them, Hongqi, as the brand used for China's national leader's vehicles, has attracted significant attention. A director of Indomobil Group confirmed in Guangzhou that both brands are currently in the local testing and product certification (homologasi) stage in Indonesia, with relevant administrative procedures underway. According to the plan, Hongqi will be the first to launch in Indonesia in July 2026, followed one month later by Leap Motor in August.
For Leap Motor, its vehicle designs were registered in Indonesia as early as 2023. According to the Industrial Design Official Gazette published by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Leap Motor's application was submitted by Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co., Ltd. in September 2023, and officially published in November of the same year. The Hongqi brand holds a special status as one of China's oldest luxury automotive brands, under FAW Group. Its flagship model, the Hongqi L5, serves as the official vehicle for China's national leaders, symbolizing the highest standard of China's automotive industry.
Indomobil Group will operate Hongqi in Indonesia through its subsidiary PT IMG Sejahtera Langgeng. The company signed a formal distribution agreement with China FAW Group Import and Export Co., Ltd. on July 7, 2025, obtaining exclusive distribution rights for Hongqi vehicles in Indonesia, covering vehicle sales, after-sales service, and parts supply. With the addition of Hongqi and Leap Motor, Indomobil Group's portfolio of automotive brands in Indonesia further expands. As of the end of 2024, the group had already taken over the sales rights for the Jeep brand.
Its current lineup also includes GAC Aion (AION), Audi, SAIC Maxus, Great Wall Motors (GWM), Citroën, Hino, Kia, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Suzuki, Volkswagen, and other domestic and international brands, forming a comprehensive layout covering luxury, mainstream, and new energy market segments. The arrival of these two Chinese brands will further intensify competition in the Indonesian automotive market, particularly injecting new vitality into the new energy and luxury vehicle segments. With its official background and luxury positioning, Hongqi, along with Leap Motor's advantages in technology and electrification, is expected to offer Indonesian consumers more diverse choices. This also marks a deepening of Chinese automotive brands' global expansion in the Southeast Asian market.
